Main article:

The healing power of plant essences

Aromatherapy is the ancient healing art which uses nature’s pure essential oils to promote well being and balance between Body Mind and Spirit. Now widely accepted, practised and enjoyed by millions worldwide including medical communities, the benefits of this ancient healing practice is well documented. Essential oils are now easily available to purchase over the counter in shops, on the website or through qualified Aromatherapists. Aromatherapy is practised by many therapists and nurses in hospitals and hospices in the UK. The essential oils can be used in a variety of ways including massage, inhalations, burnt in oil burners, added to baths or used in compresses.

This section is not intended to be a full description of what aromatherapy is – we have relevant website links at the end of this page for further information. The information given here is mainly for anyone who is interested or already using essential oils as part of their lifestyle practice. We are suggesting which oils work well with the colour breathing disks.

• If you are a fully qualified Aromatherapist, you can help your patient relax prior to their treatment by letting them look at your colour breathing disks and selecting which colour they feel most attracted to that particular day. Obviously, depending on their physical condition and emotional needs, we have found that using oils associated with the relevant colour breathing disk colour tends to add another dimension to your patient’s treatment.

• If you are a not a qualified practitioner, we recommend that you seek advice about the use of aromatherapy oils with someone fully qualified and registered before using the oils for massage purposes at home. This is because some oils have what are known as contraindications and are dangerous with several conditions such as epilepsy or diabetes. (A list of organisations to contact to find a fully qualified practitioner is at the end of this section.) However there are other ways you can safely use aromatherapy oils at home:

• Inhalation of oils using a bowl of hot water – no more than 3 drops to a bowl of water. The steam vapours will clear your head and refresh your senses

• 3 drops of oil on a tissue. Keep in your shirt pocket and again you will benefit from the vapours.

• Add 10 drops to 0.5 L distilled water to a plastic spray bottle and refresh your home with natural scents.

• Please see guidelines chart below should you purchase essential oils for home use.

Safety with Aromatherapy.
1) Only buy high quality oils from reputable supplier. The label should state that the contents are pure, undiluted essential oil or an essential oil diluted with almond or vegetable oil.
2) Never apply pure, undiluted oils to the skin.
3) Never swallow essential oils unless they are supplied by a trained Aromatherapist and under their supervision
4) If you wish to combine oils, seek advice from fully qualified Aromatherapist first.
5) As with all medicines, keep essential oils out of the reach of children and pets.
