| Main article: Colour and Sound Therapy Page 2 By Rachael Kelly P ASIACT MIAC Dr Hans Jenny created a system called “Cymatics” with his research experiments in the 1970’s. In these experiments he used a steel plate and an oscillator, putting various liquid, pastes, iron filings etc onto the steel plate and projected various frequencies into the plate, which created various formations depending upon the vibration, which was emitted though the substances. Again the vibrations changed according to the frequency used, often creating beautiful geometric shapes within the substance used, showing us just how much vibration affects any substance and has the potential to change that substance, thus creating something new or restructuring it. In this scientific experiment we see the substances placed onto metal plates, and the substance will have had a natural frequency and when another frequency was added it changed the original vibration and created something new and as such we could see this in the experiments pictures as the substances visually changes in vibratory rate and thus showing itself on a vibratory and physical level as being something new. The Cymatics/Water experiments illustrate exactly what sound and colour do on a vibrational level. The substance or water has its own unique and original vibration, when a new vibration is added it changes the original vibratory rates, and therefore changing the structure of the substance. In order to bring the substance back to its natural state we have to use a like vibration to re-establish the natural frequency. So on a vibratory level if sound or colour is added this will change the vibration and creates something new or brings the original vibration back to that which it naturally wants to vibrate. Sound and colour works within the charkas and chakra in Sanskrit means, “Wheel”. Chakras are vortices of energy located between the base of the spine and the crown of the head. They are receptors, mediators and distributors within your body of subtle energy that is our aura. It is our aura that vitalises the atoms of our physical bodies. The “Aura” is a field of energy surrounding our physical body, which is invisible to most humans, but visible to those with clairvoyant sight. The Aura is made of what is best described as different layers of energy, which interpenetrate one another, and in combination make up the whole aura. The aura is also linked with the physical body and it is said that dis-ease manifests within the aura first of all and moves through the different aspects of the aura and unless this blocked or stagnant energy is released within the aura (or charkas and meridians) it will eventually enter the physical body and manifest as disease, stress or illness etc. So it is not only the physical body, which is made of vibration, but also the energy bodies of the charkas, meridians and aura. Again when imbalance occurs within any and or all aspects of the being on a level of vibration it is because a new frequency has been established and one that does not match the frequency with which that aspect naturally wants to vibrate and as such disease or dis-ease is created and eventually over time if left untreated or the treatment is unsatisfactory then the aspects will break down completely, creating a possible domino effect within other parts of the being and eventually over time may lead to the complete death of the physical as it cannot cope with the vibrations that are not natural to it. A simple yet profound way to look at how sound and colour therapy works is to look at the universal law of “like attracts like”. The universal law shows that when a part of us is dis-eased it is because it is out of sync with its natural state of vibration. We can use like attracting like as a means to restore balance to that aspect and bring it back to ease. This can be done in several ways, for example through the charkas, which are each, aligned with a note on the scale and by using the relevant note on the associated chakra we can bring balance through sympathetic resonance moving us from dis-ease to ease or we can use the associated colour of the associated chakra again bringing that aspect through sympathetic resonance back into balance. As beings made purely of vibration what better way to treat a client made purely of vibration, than with vibration or treat like with like. Sound and colour healing can entrain the brain to move into different brainwave states from Beta to Alpha, Theta and Delta. In the East and in ancient cultures the use of sound and colour to alter states of being and to heal has been known about for many thousands of years. It has not been until recent history that Modern Western Medicine is catching up with this theory. Brain wave frequencies are different frequencies of the brain measured by EEG biofeedback. There are several recognised brainwave frequencies and both colour and sound can change the pattern of brainwave frequencies moving us into different states of consciousness, and these include:
Sound and colour allow the body, mind and soul to enter into the optimum healing frequency of 7.83 cps and this brainwave frequency has been used by ancient cultures for this very purpose. Sound and colour affect us on both a conscious and sub-conscious level. Colour and sound allow us to enter into altered brain wave frequencies, which can be measured scientifically or measured by the person as they enter into altered states of being as associated with the Shaman or healer. Sound and colour work on the principle that each object, body part or aspect of our being has a natural resonance, which is the frequency at which each individual aspects most naturally wants to vibrate. Through entrainment which is the phenomenon of vibration in which the powerful rhythmic vibrations of one object will cause the less powerful vibration of another object to lock in step and oscillate at the first objects frequency. Hemi-Sync is also used which is when through the use of two different frequencies i.e. 100 and 107 cps which creates a third frequency in this example would be 7 cps, this third frequency stimulates different brainwave frequencies and synchronise the left and right brain. Sympathetic resonance is a big part of sound and colour healing and it occurs when the resonance or an aspect of us is brought into a like vibrate allowing that aspect to resonate at the frequency it most naturally wants to vibrate and when we are balanced throughout is optimum health. Sound and colour work in all aspects of the being the physical body, the charkas and the aura and through various principles help to bring balance back to each area. In the East each of the charkas are associated with colours, notes and vowel sounds. We can see from this the close association with colour and sound and how they are both forms of vibrations used to bring balance and heal. When we are using or working with a particular colour we are also working with the associated note and vice versa. For example in sound therapy we may use a crystal singing bowl that has the note “C” which when played will help to balance the base chakra, but as we play the bowl it will be creating the vibration of the colour red, so therefore we are working with both sound and colour. If we add some red to the bowl we can visibly see the red and the vibration of the red is being playing as the bowl is being played and we are working within the red area of the body as well as in the charkas and the aura. The sounds and colours are working through each of the different levels of the being. The table below shows the colours and sound associations and we can see that by using a whole system we can bring total balance. The seven charkas, the seven colours of the rainbow the seven notes on the scale they are all interlinked and interpenetrate one another and when working with one we are working with all of them.
The Hindu tradition of India and the East have been using sound for centuries in the form of Sanskrit Mantra where they align each of the Chakras or energy bodies with a particular note/vowel sound and appropriate Sanskrit Mantras. The Sanskrit alphabet has 50 letters and each of the charkas from the Base/Root Chakra to the Third Eye chakra are shown in pictorial form as representing a number of petals on the lotus, each of the petals on the first 6 chakras add up to 50 letters which represent the Sanskrit alphabet. So we can see that by chanting a mantra, which is associated with a particular area of the body one could bring that area back into a state of normal or natural resonance through the use of sympathetic resonance. In reality we are also chanting the colours within the vowels sounds and working with particular vibrations within that chakra with which the vowel sound is associated. So the ancient art of mantra is a system of vibration through not just the audible sound of saying the mantra but the colour/s the mantra creates and the chakra/s with which they work through. Conclusions Each of these healing tools is working with vibration at different frequencies and I believe sound and colour work in perfect balance and harmony with one another. We can see that both colour and sound work to balance the being is exactly the same way. We experience them both through the senses, through what may seem like different senses, but in truth we experience sound and colour through all of the senses.
