The CBRT NHS QIPP Training Initiatives

CBRT – a case for NHS Adoption 2013 from Nosila

The CBRT NHS Initiatives are all about ’Putting People First’ and ‘making time for Compassionate Care’ in the NHS and Social Care. SONY DSCdepression image

CBRT™ – Colour Breathing Relaxation Technique® – is a practical, safe, simple and effective way to help patients relax naturally. Being able to relax is beneficial to many health conditions and can improve patient’s outcomes.

Since March 2011, CBRT has met many Very Senior Management individuals within the NHS, NHS England and the Department of Health. There are three CBRT NHS QIPP Initiaitives: 1) for Depression and Anxiety, 2) for Older People and Dementia, 3) for Children and Young People.

The two day CBRT Training Programme provides all nursing staff, allied healthcare staff, healthcare assistants and Social Care staff with the necessary skills and tools to deliver structured and guided Mindfulness based CBRT Relaxation Support Sessions which provide measurable outcomes.

A QIPP focused initiative, CBRT is a non-pharmaceutical led relaxation intervention – which fully supports the findings of the Francis Report in “Putting Patients First”, “Compassion in Practice”, staff training and improving standards for healthcare assistants. Designed to deliver high quality, guided and structured relaxation support sessions, CBRT initiatives will enable immediate localism, scale and pace diffusion for large scale adoption.

CBRT is also designed to be used as a self-care kit for patients, which will help the NHS teams provide a ‘better value, better outcomes’ service and meet the health needs of the local patient population.

Colour Breathing Kit® includes easel of seven Colour Breathing DisksThe Colour Breathing Relaxation Technique® uses seven Colour Breathing Disks® (the device) to enable more health enhancing behaviours and benefits of Mindfulness, Relaxation and Positive Thinking –  to benefit patients in an easy to use, visual and simple format.

  • CBRT Relaxation Support Sessions are structured and guided by trained staff for individuals and groups; making time to relax together provides a valuable time for patient-staff interface.
  • Learning how to relax deeply, breathe properly and positive thinking – can assist patients in their daily self-management of many conditions, including mild to moderate depression.
  • NHS Improvement Programmes will be supported such as Heart (hypertension), long term conditions, Stroke, Lung/COPD, Cancer.
  • CBRT is very suitable for use in antenatal, dementia, rehabilitation, enhanced recovery and peer support strategies, such as the CALM Programme – (see testimonial in download area below.)

A British Innovation, CBRT is designed to enable NHS providers in primary and secondary care to very quickly be able to provide Patients with an easy to learn relaxation technique.

Being trained to deliver practical, safe, simple, and effective CBRT Relaxation Support Sessions will enhance nursing communication skills with patients – either as individuals or in group settings of up to 20 patients – and promote active care and compassion.

The CBRT NHS Training Initiative is the culmination of over 16 years work.

  • The two day CBRT Training Programme is suitable for all nursing staff, allied healthcare staff and Healthcare assistants.Join our next Practitioner Training Programmeee
  • CBRT initially train a cohort of 20 – 28 staff who are required to complete a 40 question Assessment paper and 10 case studies each within 6 -8 weeks of their Training Programme.
  • Upon successful completion of papers, staff will each receive a certificate of training and be able to deliver structured and guided relaxation support sessions for patients – as individuals or within a group setting – whenever required.
  • CBRT is ideal in integrated patient care, rehabilitation, self care, health prevention and wellbeing programmes.
  • Each Initiative includes 5 members of above staff receiving a further two days ” CBRT – Train the Trainer” to enable local delivery of future CBRT Training Programmes and sustainability of programme. 100 CBRT Training kits are included in each initiative.

An NHS IAPT Psychological Therapies Commissioner has reviewed the CBRT NHS Training Initiative and written:

  • “The principles of building confidence and socialisation are good, as commissioners we understand how important this is for a patient’s recovery.”
  • “The proposal is very good and well presented, with a good evidence base and clinical outcomes.”
  • “On paper, the savings are good, a reduction in primary care presentations, and this is similar to IAPT where we also know there are reductions in referrals to secondary care.”nurses

The following document NICE – Quality Standards Programme – Cost impact and commissioning assessment: quality standard for depression in adults (March 2011) was provided by the NHS South of England Innovation Manager as a prime example of how CBRT Relaxation Support Sessions relate in a similar way to the total expected saving per IAPT patient being £340.00  in a two year period. NHS Staff trained in CBRT would therefore only need to support a minimum of 264 Patients in Year One (less than one per day)  to recoup the initial investment in the whole CBRT Training Initiative. (2.11 Patients per trained staff member.) Supporting more patients would, the NICE paper suggests, result in a saving to the organisation as well as enhanced quality of care and experience for the patient.

Between March – May 2012, CBRT completed the NHS National Innovation Centre (NIC) Technology Scorecard Process and received a 92.53% score. The Colour Breathing Disks apparatus have a UK Patent and are being registered as a Class 1 Medical Device.

Innovation Health and Wealth promotes the obligation to promote innovation; CBRT provides NHS providers with a quick to action, value for money, patient-centred solution.

  • The CBRT book kit (which includes an audio CD, 138 page full colour book and easel card set of seven Colour Breathing Disks) is a high quality full colour, practical, long lasting, non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive product /intervention. Patients can be provided with or allowed to borrow their own CBRT kit for use at home.
  • CBRT are publishing the “CBRT Daily Observations Diary” for individuals to use daily to record their use of CBRT at home as part of their patient choice self-care programme.

A low cost, value for money Initiative: Two day CBRT Training Programme for 28 staff + “Train the Trainer” for 5 staff + 100 Training KitsColour Breathing Relaxation day at DEFRA 2008

This Initiative provides each Trust/CCG with a sustainable model which includes an initial two day Training Programme for 28 allied healthcare and nursing staff, a two day “Train the Trainer” Training Programme for 5 staff and 100 CBRT Training Kits for the provision of local CBRT Training Programmes.

“All allied healthcare, nursing and social care staff should be allowed to attend a two day CBRT Training Programme. CBRT underpins the 6 C’s. The provision of structured CBRT Relaxation Support Sessions for patients – whether used once-only or as a series of 6 – 8 sessions – provides communication between patient and staff and a positive contribution towards enhancing patients’ wellbeing. CBRT is an active interface for all patient care and compassion programmes and is suitable for all to learn.”

The CBRT Training Programme has been invited to apply for CPD Accreditation with The Royal College of Nursing and ’Endorsement process’ with The College of Occupational Therapists.

Training Programme participants are required to have a basic PC ability to be able to complete an online 40 question Assessment Paper and 10 Case Studies (individual and group settings) following their Two day Training Programme within a six week period before receiving a Certificate of Training.
